Archival Overview
Patriarch of modern Moroccan theater, playwright, and poet who authored over forty plays and adapted Molière and Shakespeare into Moroccan Darija, penning the lyrics of classic national songs.
Biographical Record
Ahmed Taïeb El Alj was born in Fez into a family of traditional carpenters and wood artisans. Developing a lifelong passion for folk poetry and dramatic arts, he transformed Moroccan vernacular theater in the 1950s and 1960s with the Troupe de la Maâmora.
His adaptations of world theater into idiomatic, richly poetic Moroccan Darija (such as Molière's Tartuffe and Le Médecin malgré lui) became beloved theatrical masterpieces. He also wrote timeless lyrics for legendary singers including Abdelwahab Doukkali.
