Archival Overview

Egyptian literary titan crowned by delegations from across the Arab world as 'Amir al-Shu'ara' (The Prince of Poets) in 1927, who revived classical Arabic poetic eloquence and pioneered verse drama.

Biographical Record

Ahmed Shawqi (1868–1932) was born of mixed Kurdish, Circassian, Greek, and Arab heritage in Cairo. Educated in law in Montpellier and Paris, he served as court poet to Khedive Abbas Hilmi II. Exiled to Barcelona by the British during World War I, Shawqi immersed himself in Andalusian poetry and European theater.

Returning to Egypt in 1919, Shawqi became the voice of the Egyptian national movement. He revolutionized modern Arabic literature by inventing Arabic verse drama with masterpieces like The Fall of Cleopatra (Masra' Kliyubatra) and Majnun Layla. In 1927, poets and scholars from Morocco to Iraq gathered in Cairo to formally crown him the Prince of Poets.
