Archival Overview
Formidable Emir of the Trarza and master Saharan cavalry strategist who led the armed resistance against French colonial occupation, annihilating colonial columns at the Battle of El-Albe in 1908.
Biographical Record
Son of Emir Sidi Mohamed Ould Mohamed Lahbib, Ahmed Ould Deid was a legendary desert horseman who assumed command of the Trarza warriors following the French occupation of Mederdra. A master of camouflage, water-point ambushes, and nighttime cavalry charges, he struck fear into colonial commanders.
In 1908, at the Battle of El-Albe, his warriors destroyed an elite French force, killing colonial commander Captain Reboul. After years of relentless resistance, he concluded an honorable treaty in 1910 preserving traditional nomadic grazing customs and Islamic sharia courts, governing as Emir until 1944.
