Archival Overview

Prominent Fez patrician and nationalist in whose historic palace (Dar Mekouar) the Moroccan Proclamation of Independence (Manifesto of 11 January 1944) was drafted, debated, and signed.

Biographical Record

Hajj Ahmed Mekouar was a revered industrialist, merchant, and nationalist of Fez. Dedicated to the clandestine liberation struggle, he placed his vast riad in the Batha neighborhood of Fez at the service of the national movement.

On January 11, 1944, sixty-six Moroccan leaders gathered in secret at Dar Mekouar to debate and sign the historic Proclamation of Independence (Wathiqat al-Istiqlal) presented to Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Youssef and Allied representatives. Arrested repeatedly and subjected to house arrest, Mekouar survived to see his house designated a national historical shrine.
