Cheikh Ahmed Guerftti was born in the blue mountain town of Chefchaouen. A master of rural oral traditions and reed instruments, he was the first artist to systematically organize the poetic forms of the northern Moroccan mountain clans into recorded musical suites.
His recordings for Radio Tetouan in the 1950s and 1960s preserved centuries of pastoral, wedding, and harvest songs that constitute the core of northern Moroccan folk heritage.
