Archival Overview
Revered Egyptian vernacular poet, activist, and dissident known as 'Al-Fagumi' (The Outspoken), whose biting political satire and lifelong partnership with blind singer Sheikh Imam gave voice to the working poor and political prisoners.
Biographical Record
Born in rural Sharqia, Negm worked as a manual laborer and postal clerk before turning his razor-sharp pen to dissident poetry. Imprisoned for eighteen years across the reigns of Nasser, Sadat, and Mubarak, his spirit remained unbroken.
Forming a legendary duo with Sheikh Imam, their acoustic songs spread on cassette tapes across the Arab world, inspiring student protests and the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. In 2013, he was awarded the Dutch Prince Claus Award for cultural courage.
