Biographical Record
Ahmed Boumendjel was a brilliant attorney who practiced at the Paris and Algiers bars alongside Ferhat Abbas in the Democratic Union of the Algerian Manifesto (UDMA). When his younger brother, lawyer Ali Boumendjel, was tortured and thrown to his death from a building by French paratroopers in 1957, Ahmed joined the FLN in Tunis.
Appointed to the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic (GPRA), Boumendjel represented Algeria at the crucial Melun talks in June 1960 and the subsequent Evian conferences. Following independence, he served as Minister of Public Works, contributing greatly to rebuilding the nation's infrastructure.
