Biographical Record
Ahmed Bouanani studied cinema at the prestigious IDHEC film school in Paris, returning to Morocco in 1963 to work at the Centre Cinématographique Marocain (CCM). A multi-talented artist, he published avant-garde poetry in the journal 'Souffles' alongside Abdellatif Laâbi.
His 1980 feature film 'Al-Sarab' (The Mirage), depicting a destitute peasant who discovers banknotes hidden in a sack of flour, used haunting poetic realism to critique poverty and illusion in colonial Morocco. His illustrated novel 'L'Hôpital' is celebrated as a summit of North African surrealist fiction.
