Archival Overview
Foundational 15th-century Moroccan jurist and reformer of Fez whose classic treatise Qawa'id al-Tasawwuf reconciled Islamic jurisprudence and mystical spirituality across North Africa.
Biographical Record
Orphaned in childhood in Fez, Ahmad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad Zarruq al-Burnusi studied at the University of al-Qarawiyyin, becoming one of the most brilliant Maliki jurists of the era. Disturbed by legalistic complacency, he journeyed to Cairo, Medina, and Tripoli.
His masterwork *Qawa'id al-Tasawwuf* (The Principles of Sufism) formulated an enduring methodology balancing outward observance of religious law (sharia) with inner spiritual purification (haqiqa). His teachings influenced the Shadhiliyya tradition throughout Morocco, Algeria, Libya, and Egypt.
