Biographical Record
Ahmad Zahir was born on June 14, 1946, in Kabul, the son of prominent physician and Prime Minister Abdul Zahir. While attending Habibia High School, his electrifying musical talent earned him the nickname 'the Nightingale of Habibia', leading him to master the accordion, harmonium, and guitar.
Zahir recorded over twenty-two studio albums, modernizing Afghan music by blending traditional acoustic instruments with electric guitars, brass sections, and Latin rhythms while singing verses by classical masters Rumi, Saadi, and Simin Behbahani. His songs, including 'Laili Laili Jan' and 'Sultan-e Qalbam', transcended ethnic and class divisions. On his thirty-third birthday, June 14, 1979, he was murdered under mysterious political circumstances in the Salang Pass.
