Biographical Record

Field Marshal Ahmad Ismail Ali (1917–1974) graduated from the Royal Military Academy in Cairo in 1938 alongside Anwar Sadat and Gamal Abdel Nasser. Rising to Director of Military Intelligence and Chief of Staff during the War of Attrition, he was appointed Minister of War and Commander-in-Chief in 1972.

Working in close partnership with Chief of Staff Saad el-Shazly, Ismail coordinated the unprecedented strategic deception plan that completely blinded Israeli intelligence ahead of the October 6, 1973 assault. Awarded the Star of Sinai and promoted to Field Marshal, he died of cancer in London a year later.
