Archival Overview
Moroccan-born global Islamic reformer and mystic of Fez who founded the Idrisiyya revivalist movement, teaching Muhammad ibn Ali al-Senussi and shaping 19th-century Sufism.
Biographical Record
Ahmad ibn Idris al-Fasi was an illustrious scholar of pure Idrisid sharifian descent born near Fez. After decades of intensive study at the University of al-Qarawiyyin, he became the foremost hadith authority and spiritual reformer of his era, traveling across Egypt, Mecca, and Yemen.
He formulated the 'Tariqa Muhammadiyya', rejecting blind sectarian imitation ('taqlid') and demanding a direct spiritual and ethical return to the Quran and Sunnah. His eminent disciples, including Muhammad ibn Ali al-Senussi (founder of the Senussi movement) and Ibrahim al-Rashid, spread his reformist teachings across Africa and Asia.
