Archival Overview

Moroccan scholar and Darqawi Sufi master who authored over forty books, including the celebrated mystical Quranic commentary 'Al-Bahr al-Madid' (The Oceanic Exegesis) and his candid spiritual autobiography 'Fahrasa'.

Biographical Record

Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ajiba al-Hasani (1747–1809) was born into an Idrisi sharifian family near Tetouan in northern Morocco. After becoming a master of exoteric Islamic sciences in Fez, he experienced a profound spiritual crisis, joining the newly founded Darqawiyya order under Moulay Muhammad al-Buzidi.

Ibn Ajiba threw away his fine scholarly robes, donned patched rags, and wore a necklace of heavy wooden prayer beads through the streets of Tetouan, suffering imprisonment for defying academic pride. He authored Al-Bahr al-Madid fi Tafsir al-Qur'an al-Majid, the only traditional Quranic commentary that provides both exoteric legal exegesis and esoteric mystical interpretations (isharat) for every single verse of the Quran.
