Biographical Record
Ahmad I Bey (1805–1855) assumed the throne in 1837, deeply determined to modernize Tunisia to prevent European colonial subjugation following France's 1830 capture of Algiers. In 1840, he founded the pioneering Bardo Polytechnic Military Academy (Maktab al-Harbi), training native engineers, artillerymen, and naval officers.
On January 23, 1846, Ahmad Bey issued a historic decree abolishing slavery throughout the Regency of Tunis, making Tunisia one of the earliest sovereign states in human history to declare all enslaved people free, based on Islamic principles of human dignity. In 1846, he visited France, received as an independent sovereign monarch by King Louis-Philippe.
