"Sufism without jurisprudence is heresy; jurisprudence without Sufism is corruption; but uniting both is spiritual realization."

Archival Overview

Moroccan-born Islamic scholar and Shadhili Sufi reformer who reconciled exoteric jurisprudence with esoteric mysticism in his classic 'Qawa'id al-Tasawwuf', buried in Misrata, Libya.

Biographical Record

Ahmad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Isa al-Zarruq (1442–1493) was orphaned in infancy in Fez and raised by his grandmother, a pious scholar. After mastering the Maliki curriculum at Al-Qarawiyyin, he studied at Al-Azhar in Cairo and with Shadhili masters across Egypt and Medina.

Al-Zarruq was a fearless intellectual who combated superstitious deviations and charlatanism within Sufism while rebuking literalist legal scholars for lack of spiritual heart. In his masterpiece Qawa'id al-Tasawwuf (The Principles of Sufism), he formulated eighteen foundational rules harmonizing Sharia law and spiritual realization. In his final years, he settled in Misrata, Libya, founding an influential zawiya.
