Biographical Record
Sayyid Ahmad al-Sharif al-Senussi (1873–1933) succeeded his uncle as head of the Senussi brotherhood in 1902. He initially led campaigns against French colonial advances in Chad and the central Sahara before confronting the Italian invasion of Cyrenaica and Tripolitania in 1911.
Uniting Libyan Bedouins with Ottoman officers (including Enver Pasha and Mustafa Kemal), Ahmad al-Sharif fought tenaciously against European encroachment. In 1918, he transferred military leadership in Cyrenaica to Omar al-Mukhtar before traveling to Istanbul and Medina, continuing to organize international diplomatic support for Libyan independence.
