Archival Overview

Charismatic chieftain of the Tarhuna tribal confederation and president of the Supreme Council of the Tripolitanian Republic (1918–1922), who led ferocious resistance against Italian colonial forces.

Biographical Record

A prominent political and military leader of western Libya, Ahmad al-Marid unified the influential tribes of Tarhuna and Msallata against the Italian invasion. Following the 1915 Battle of Qasr Abu Hadi, he cleared Italian garrisons from the Tripolitanian interior.

In November 1918, alongside Ramadan al-Suwayhli and Suleiman al-Barouni, he co-founded the *Tripolitanian Republic* (Al-Jumhuriyya al-Tarabulsiyya)—the first modern democratic republic declared in the Arab world—presiding over its four-member governing council until Italian forces reoccupied the region in 1923.
