Archival Overview
Supreme 18th-century Maliki jurist, theologian, and spiritual reformer of Al-Azhar whose legal compendium al-Sharh al-Saghir is studied throughout North and West Africa, known as the champion of Cairo's common folk.
Biographical Record
Born in Upper Egypt, Abu al-Barakat Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Dardir graduated from Al-Azhar, appointed Chief of the Maliki school of jurisprudence and inspector of the sacred mosque. He combined profound legal scholarship with spiritual leadership in the Khalwatiyya Sufi order.
When Mamluk beys levied extortionate taxes and terrorized Cairo markets in 1785, Imam al-Dardir closed the gates of Al-Azhar and mobilized tens of thousands of ordinary craftsmen and citizens in massive civil disobedience, forcing the rulers to sign a covenant guaranteeing citizen rights. His shrine near Al-Azhar remains an enduring sanctuary.
