Archival Overview
Remarkable 18th-century polymath and Grand Imam of Al-Azhar who was simultaneously a practicing physician, mathematician, and philosopher, lecturing on anatomy and algebra at Al-Azhar.
Biographical Record
Orphaned in childhood in the Delta city of Damanhur, Ahmad al-Damanhuri came to Cairo where his exceptional intellect mastered all four Sunni legal schools (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali). Simultaneously, he trained under Cairo's premier Christian and Muslim doctors in Galenic and Ibn Sina medicine.
Elected Grand Imam of Al-Azhar in 1768, he broke conservative scholastic stagnation by teaching mathematics, astronomical geometry, and medicine directly within the sacred mosque. He authored *Al-Qawl al-Sarih fi Ilm al-Tashrih* (Clear Discourse on the Science of Anatomy), advocating empirical medical dissection.
