Archival Overview

Venerated 20th-century Algerian Sufi master who founded the worldwide Alawiyya tariqa in Mostaganem, published reformist newspapers, and whose spiritual depth was celebrated by European philosophers including Martin Lings.

Biographical Record

Born in Mostaganem, Cheikh Ahmad ibn Mustafa al-Alawi revitalized modern Islamic mysticism along the Shadhili-Darqawi line. In 1909, he established the autonomous Alawiyya order, erecting his famous zawiya overlooking the Mediterranean.

He founded bilingual journals (L'Islam, Al-Balagh al-Jaza'iri) advocating social reform, traditional craft preservation, and spiritual renewal against colonial cultural erosion. His spiritual presence drew thousands across North Africa, Syria, and Europe, memorialized in Martin Lings' classic A Sufi Saint of the Twentieth Century.
