Biographical Record
Antonio Agostinho Neto was born on September 17, 1922, in Icolo e Bengo. After studying medicine at the Universities of Coimbra and Lisbon, he was repeatedly arrested by the Portuguese PIDE secret police for his anti-colonial activities, writing poignant prison poetry published internationally as Sacred Hope (Sagrada Esperança).
Escaping from house arrest in Portugal in 1962, Neto assumed the leadership of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA). On November 11, 1975, amidst fierce civil conflict, he solemnly proclaimed Angola's independence in Luanda. A staunch internationalist, he supported liberation movements across southern Africa, providing crucial bases to SWAPO and the ANC until his death in 1979.
