Aelbert Cuyp (1620–1691 CE) was the pre-eminent artist of Dordrecht, inheriting a prosperous workshop from his father Jacob Gerritszoon Cuyp.

Influenced by Jan Both's Italianate warmth, Cuyp bathed ordinary Dutch cows and calm rivers in a transcendent, glowing golden atmospheric haze that deeply inspired 18th-century British collectors.
