Archival Overview
Loyal Mauretanian commander and royal freedman who led a fierce four-year rebellion across Morocco against the Roman Empire following the murder of King Ptolemy by Caligula.
Biographical Record
Aedemon was a high-ranking freedman and loyal military commander in the household of King Ptolemy of Mauretania. When Roman Emperor Caligula treacherous summoned Ptolemy to Rome and had him assassinated in 40 CE to seize his kingdom's gold, Aedemon rallied the Moorish population in armed revolt.
Aedemon mobilized the tribes of the Rif and Atlas Mountains, sacking Roman garrisons and defending Volubilis. Rome was forced to dispatch veteran legions under generals Marcus Licinius Crassus Frugi and Suetonius Paulinus, who waged four years of grueling mountain warfare before Aedemon fell in battle in 44 CE.
