Archival Overview

French mathematician who invented the method of least squares, formulated Legendre polynomials, and made foundational contributions to number theory and the law of quadratic reciprocity.

Biographical Record

Adrien-Marie Legendre (1752–1833) was a central figure of the French scientific enlightenment. In 1805, in an appendix to his work on cometary orbits, he published the first public description of the method of least squares, the mathematical backbone of regression analysis and data fitting.

In celestial mechanics, his solutions to gravitational potential gave rise to Legendre polynomials. His 1798 'Theorie des nombres' systematized number theory and stated the law of quadratic reciprocity and the prime number theorem conjecture.

Key Life Milestones

1782

Introduction of Legendre Polynomials

Introduced the orthogonal polynomials in spherical harmonics to calculate gravitational attraction.

1805

Invention of the Method of Least Squares

Published the first formulation of least squares data fitting in 'Nouvelles methodes pour la determination des orbites des cometes'.
