Archival Overview
Brilliant, bohemian painter of seventeenth-century low-life tavern scenes whose expressive brushwork and raw psychological realism earned the passionate admiration of Rubens and Rembrandt.
Biographical Record
Born in Oudenaarde, Brouwer lived a turbulent, wandering life between Amsterdam, Haarlem (where he studied with Frans Hals), and Antwerp. Joining the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1631, he frequented smoky alehouses and taverns, documenting brawls, smokers, and card players.
His small, painterly panels captured vivid facial grimaces and human emotional extremes with rapid, energetic brushwork and subtle tonal chiaroscuro. Despite dying in poverty from the plague, Rubens owned seventeen of Brouwer's paintings, and Rembrandt eight.
