Biographical Record
Admiral Yi Sun-sin (1545–1598) is universally celebrated as one of the greatest naval strategists in world history. Serving Joseon Korea during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Japanese invasions (Imjin War), he perfected the ironclad-roofed Geobukseon (Turtle Ship) armed with cannon arrays and iron spikes to repel boarding actions.
In 1597 at the Battle of Myeongnyang, facing 133 Japanese warships with just 13 surviving panokseon vessels, Yi exploited fierce tidal currents to annihilate 31 enemy flagships without losing a single ship, miraculously saving Korea from conquest.
