Biographical Record
Trained in the Royal Navy aboard HMS Worcester in Britain, Togo Heihachiro (1848–1934) rose to command the Combined Fleet in the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905). On May 27, 1905, aboard his flagship Mikasa in the Tsushima Strait, he raised the iconic Z-flag: 'The fate of the Empire rests on this battle; let every man do his utmost.'
Togo executed the daring 'Togo Turn'—turning his battle line directly across the enemy's path to cross the T (capping the T). In twenty-four hours, the Japanese navy sank twenty-one Russian warships, captured seven, and suffered the loss of only three torpedo boats, achieving the most decisive fleet annihilation in modern naval warfare.
