Eighth-century philosopher, theologian, and master sage who revitalized Vedic thought across India by establishing Advaita (Non-Dualism). Founded the four cardinal monastic Mathas and authored brilliant Upanishadic commentaries.

Biographical Record

Taking the vows of renunciation (Sannyasa) as a youth, Shankara journeyed on foot across the entirety of the Indian subcontinent from the southern tip of Kerala to Kashmir and the Himalayas. In philosophical debates, he demonstrated the non-dual reality of Brahman and Atman.

He unified divergent Hindu traditions through the Panchayatana worship system and established four supreme monastic seats (Dwaraka, Puri, Sringeri, and Badrinath) before merging into final meditation at Kedarnath at age thirty-two.
