Archival Overview
First President of the Somali Republic (1960–1967) who made African history in 1967 by peacefully conceding electoral defeat, establishing a benchmark of constitutional democracy.
Biographical Record
Aden Abdulle Osman Daar, universally revered as Aden Adde, was born on December 9, 1908, in Beledweyne, Hiran. Joining the anti-colonial Somali Youth League (SYL) in 1944, he rose to become its president in 1954 and President of the Legislative Assembly in 1956.
Upon the unification of former British and Italian Somalilands on July 1, 1960, Adde was elected the first President of the Somali Republic. Governing with austere personal honesty and strict adherence to constitutional law, he made continental history in the 1967 presidential election: upon losing by a narrow margin to Abdirashid Ali Shermarke, he immediately conceded defeat and congratulated his rival, becoming the first head of state in modern African history to step down peacefully via democratic election.
