Archival Overview
Nova Scotia Father of Confederation who was appointed first Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba in 1870, establishing civil administration, negotiating Treaties 1 and 2, and healing post-resistance divisions.
Biographical Record
Archibald was a prominent Nova Scotia lawyer and reformer who supported Tupper in bringing Nova Scotia into Confederation. Appointed Canada's first Secretary of State for the Provinces, Macdonald dispatched him to the newly formed province of Manitoba following the Red River Resistance of 1870.
Arriving in a deeply polarized Red River, Archibald governed with moderation, reconciling French-speaking Métis and incoming Protestant settlers. He established Manitoba's dual public school system, organized the legislative assembly, and negotiated the foundational First Nations treaties.
