Archival Overview
Founding member 'MCA' and bassist of the groundbreaking hip-hop trio Beastie Boys, filmmaker, and Buddhist activist who organized the Tibetan Freedom Concerts.
Biographical Record
Adam Nathaniel Yauch was raised in Brooklyn and founded the hardcore punk band Beastie Boys in 1981 alongside Mike D and Ad-Rock. Teaming with producer Rick Rubin, their 1986 debut rap album 'Licensed to Ill' became the first hip-hop album to top the Billboard 200.
As the Beastie Boys evolved into musical innovators playing their own instruments on 'Paul's Boutique', 'Check Your Head', and 'Ill Communication', Yauch provided gritty raspy rhymes and directed many of their iconic music videos as Nathanial Hörnblowér. Practicing Tibetan Buddhism, he co-founded the Milarepa Fund, organizing the historic Tibetan Freedom Concerts in San Francisco and Washington. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
