Biographical Record
Achille Varzi (1904–1948) was the aristocratic antithesis of Nuvolari's ferocious aggression: calculating, elegant, and mathematically precise, he rarely slid his tires and drove with surgical economy. He won the Mille Miglia in 1934 and two Targa Florio endurance races (1930, 1934).
At the 1933 Monaco Grand Prix, driving a Bugatti Type 51, Varzi fought a breathtaking race-long duel with Nuvolari's Alfa Romeo, swapping the lead twenty-one times over ninety-nine laps before taking victory on the final lap. Returning to Alfa Romeo after WWII, he was killed during wet practice at Bremgarten.
