Archival Overview
Eleventh-century philosopher-theologian who formulated Vishishtadvaita (Qualified Non-Dualism). Challenged pure illusionism by proving that the universe and individual souls (Jivas) are the real body of the Supreme Lord (Narayana).
Biographical Record
Born in Tamil Nadu, Ramanuja studied under Yadavaprakasha before succeeding Yamunacharya as leader of the Sri Vaishnava community at the great island temple of Srirangam. Breaking strict caste secrecy, he climbed the temple tower of Thirukoshtiyur to shout the sacred liberating mantra to all outcastes, willing to suffer damnation for their salvation.
His magnum opus, the Sri Bhasya on the Brahma Sutras, demonstrated that devotion (Bhakti) and self-surrender (Prapatti) to a personal, compassionate God constitute the highest path of liberation, leaving an indelible imprint across India.
