"He stood before the gates of Kairouan, giving his life that the sacred city might survive."
Archival Overview
Son of Emir Abd al-Rahman who avenged his father's murder and led the heroic defense of Kairouan against the devastating invasion of the Warfajjuma Berber Kharijites in 757 AD.
Biographical Record
Abu Ziyad Habib rallied loyal troops in the Sahel after his father's assassination in 755 AD, entered Kairouan, and executed the usurping uncles to reclaim the emirate. However, his rule was cut short by the massive invasion of the Warfajjuma Kharijite confederacy from the south.
Refusing to abandon the holy city, Abu Ziyad led his cavalry outside the gates of Kairouan, dying sword in hand in 757 AD in a valiant attempt to prevent the sack of the city.
