Archival Overview

Marinid Sultan (1384–1386) celebrated for his deep piety, generous support for the madrasas of Fez, and patronage of illuminated Quranic calligraphers.

Biographical Record

Abu Zayan Muhammad V reigned during the fractured twilight of the Marinid dynasty. Renowned for his intellectual inclinations and personal modesty, he spent much of his reign patronizing scholars at the Bu Inania and Al-Attarine madrasas in Fez.

Despite political headwinds from competing dynastic branches backed by Castilian and Nasrid powers, he maintained legal decorum and sponsored lavish religious endowments for the Qarawiyyin library before his mysterious demise in 1386.
