"A prince of letters caught in the turbulent undertow of dynastic power."

Archival Overview

Hafsid Caliph (1277–1279 AD) who succeeded his illustrious father al-Mustansir, remembered as a cultivated patron of Andalusian poets and calligraphers.

Biographical Record

Abu Zakariya Yahya II ascended the caliphal throne of Tunis following the death of his father Muhammad I al-Mustansir (who had repelled King Louis IX of France in the Eighth Crusade of 1270). A sensitive and literary prince, Yahya was renowned for his patronage of Andalusian refugee scholars.

However, court conspiracies led by his uncle Abu Ishaq Ibrahim with Aragonese military backing resulted in his abdication in 1279 and subsequent execution in 1280, reflecting the fragile dynastic rivalries of medieval Tunis.
