Archival Overview
Founder of the independent Hafsid dynasty in 1229, who declared independence from the Almohads, established Tunis as an imperial capital, and built the Kasbah Mosque.
Biographical Record
Grandson of Abu Hafs Umar, one of the original Almohad council companions, Abu Zakariya was appointed governor of Ifriqiya in 1228. In 1229, he severed ties with Marrakesh, establishing the Hafsid Sultanate and welcoming Andalusian refugees fleeing the fall of Valencia and Cordoba.
He transformed Tunis into a majestic Mediterranean imperial capital, constructing the Kasbah Mosque, the imperial palace, and the royal library (Al-Abdaliyya). He annexed Tripoli, Constantine, and Algiers, compelling the Emirs of Granada and Marinid Fez to recognize his diplomatic suzerainty.
