Biographical Record

Abu Yazid al-Bistami (c. 804–874 CE) lived an intensely simple life in the northern Persian town of Bastam, descending from a Zoroastrian convert grandfather.

Pioneering the concept of utter negation of the ego (fana), his mystical experiences chronicled an inward heavenly ascension (miraj) in which selfhood dissolves completely in the divine presence.
