Archival Overview
Powerful Marinid Sultan (1286–1307) who captured Marrakech, mounted campaigns in al-Andalus, and conducted the epic eight-year siege of Tlemcen, constructing the fortified siege city of al-Mansurah.
Biographical Record
Abu Yaqub Yusuf an-Nasr was the son of Sultan Abu Yusuf Yaqub. A ruler of immense ambition, he consolidated internal order across Morocco before focusing his power eastward. In 1299, he laid siege to the Zayyanid capital of Tlemcen, an encirclement that lasted an unprecedented eight years.
Outside Tlemcen's walls, Abu Yaqub built a complete royal city named al-Mansurah, equipped with palaces, mosques, baths, and mints. In May 1307, on the verge of taking Tlemcen, he was fatally stabbed in his imperial tent by an assassin, abruptly halting the siege.
