Archival Overview
Fifth Almohad Caliph (1213–1224) whose eleven-year reign preserved peace, civic tranquility, and scholarly patronage across Morocco and southern Spain.
Biographical Record
Succeeding his father Muhammad al-Nasir at a young age following the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, Abu Yaqub Yusuf II, titled Al-Mustansir Billah, steered the Almohad Caliphate toward institutional stabilization and peaceful reconstruction.
He concluded long-term peace truces with the Christian kingdoms of Castile and Aragon, restored imperial palaces in Marrakesh and Rabat, and funded theological seminaries in Fez and Seville. He died tragically in an accident in his palace gardens in 1224.
