Archival Overview

Marinid Sultan (1359–1361), refined poet and patron who appointed Ibn Khaldun as Chancellor of the Royal Signet (Katib al-Alama) in Fez.

Biographical Record

Abu Salim Ali II was a son of Sultan Abu al-Hasan. Returning from exile in Granada with military support from Pedro the Cruel of Castile and the Nasrids, he entered Fez in 1359 and took the sultanate. A connoisseur of literature and statecraft, Abu Salim immediately appointed the young scholar Ibn Khaldun to the prestigious post of Keeper of the Royal Signet.

Abu Salim's reign promised cultural renewal, but reckless administrative spending provoked resentment among tribal leaders. In September 1361, his powerful minister Omar ibn Abdallah orchestrated a military insurrection; Abu Salim was captured and put to death.
