Archival Overview
Venerated 13th-century Sufi master and scholar after whom the famous blue-and-white clifftop village of Sidi Bou Said is named, who served as ribat watchman guarding the Gulf of Tunis.
Biographical Record
Abu Said Khalaf ibn Yahya al-Tamimi al-Baji was born in Béja and traveled to Mecca and Damascus, mastering Islamic sciences and Sufi metaphysics. Returning to Ifriqiya, he chose to retire to the high limestone cliff of Jebel El Manar (Mount of the Lighthouse), overlooking the azure Gulf of Tunis and Carthage.
There he combined deep contemplative mysticism with the civic duty of a coastal ribat, keeping vigil against hostile maritime raiders while tutoring disciples, including Sayyida Manoubia and Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili. Following his passing in 1231, the scenic village that grew around his tomb took his beloved name, Sidi Bou Said.
