Archival Overview
Grandson of Umar al-Hantati appointed governor of Ifriqiya in 1207 by Caliph Muhammad al-Nasir, who pacified Tunisia, suppressed the Banu Ghaniya, and established the governing foundation of the Hafsid Dynasty.
Biographical Record
Abu Muhammad Abd al-Wahid belonged to the noble Hintata Berber lineage of the High Atlas. Following the devastating raids of the Almoravid Banu Ghaniya brothers who had captured Tunis, Kairouan, and Mahdia, Caliph al-Nasir appointed Abd al-Wahid as supreme governor of Ifriqiya in 1207 with immense powers.
Abd al-Wahid systematically defeated the Banu Ghaniya, restored agrarian commerce, and established a stable, centralized bureaucracy in the Kasbah of Tunis. His governance was so effective that his son Abu Zakariya Yahya declared complete sovereignty, inaugurating the Hafsid Caliphate.
