Biographical Record
Abu Malik Abd al-Wahid was a dynamic Zayyanid monarch who reclaimed the throne of Tlemcen in 1411. A brilliant military commander and strategic diplomat, he transformed the Kingdom of Tlemcen from a defensive state into the dominant power of the western Maghreb, even capturing the Marinid capital of Fez in 1424.
During his reign, Tlemcen flourished as an international emporium for Saharan gold, ivory, Moroccan leather, and European textiles. Abu Malik funded magnificent public monuments, supported Andalusian refugee scholars fleeing Christian advances in Iberia, and maintained extensive maritime treaties with Aragon and Genoa.
