Archival Overview
Master hydraulic engineer and architect who conceived and constructed the monumental Aghlabid Basins of Kairouan in 862 CE, the largest open hydraulic system of the pre-modern world.
Biographical Record
Serving under Aghlabid Emir Abu Ibrahim Ahmad, Abu Ishaq al-Kanani was entrusted with resolving Kairouan's chronic arid climate water shortages. Between 860 and 862 CE, he engineered the extraordinary complex of open-air settling basins, aqueducts, and underground cisterns outside Bab Tunis.
The central basin, a 48-sided polygon measuring 128 meters in diameter, utilized ingenious settling chambers to filter desert silt before funneling crystal-clear mountain water through vaulted underground reservoirs. The Basins remain an engineering marvel of medieval hydraulic technology still standing today.
