Archival Overview
Fourth Aghlabid Emir (838–841 AD), renowned for personal piety, legal erudition, and generous patronization of scholars, doctors, and hydraulic engineers in Kairouan.
Biographical Record
Abu Iqal al-Aghlab was an accomplished legal scholar in his own right before ascending the throne of Ifriqiya following his brother Ziyadat Allah I. His reign was celebrated by chroniclers as a period of domestic peace, tax relief for peasants, and moral propriety.
He banned public drunkenness, patronized the physicians of Kairouan, and constructed extensive cisterns and underground water channels across central Tunisia, ensuring that agricultural production boomed.
