Archival Overview
Sixth Aghlabid Emir (856–863 AD) and one of Tunisia's greatest architectural patrons, who constructed the world-famous Aghlabid Basins of Kairouan, expanded the Ez-Zitouna Mosque, and built the Great Mosque of Sousse.
Biographical Record
Abu Ibrahim Ahmad ascended the throne at age twenty-one and ruled with exceptional wisdom and architectural grandeur. His reign represents the summit of Aghlabid hydraulic and religious construction.
In Kairouan, he constructed the monumental Aghlabid Basins (Fisqiyat al-Aghaliba)—an astonishing engineering feat consisting of massive circular reservoirs that supplied water to the capital. He also built the Great Mosque of Sousse (851 AD), completed the expansion of the Great Mosque of Kairouan with its carved cedarwood Minbar, and enlarged the Ez-Zitouna Mosque in Tunis before his untimely death at age twenty-eight.
