Archival Overview
Greatest 10th-century Arab humanist essayist, author of Al-Imta' wa-al-Mu'anasa, celebrated for his philosophical skepticism and psychological insight.
Biographical Record
Abu Hayyan al-Tawhidi was a towering literary genius and philosopher in Buyid Baghdad. Deeply immersed in Greek philosophical traditions, logic, and Arabic adab, he operated at the intellectual salons of grand viziers Ibn al-Amid and Al-Sahib ibn Abbad, though he frequently clashed with court sycophancy due to his fierce independence of mind.
His masterpiece, Kitab al-Imta' wa-al-Mu'anasa (The Book of Delight and Conviviality), records forty nights of philosophical discussions covering ethics, aesthetics, animal intelligence, language, and politics. Tawhidi's existential honesty and lucid prose established him as one of the supreme stylists of classical Arabic prose literature.
