Archival Overview
Fourth Zayyanid Sultan who rebuilt Tlemcen after the historic eight-year siege, pacified the central Maghreb, and extended borders to the Chélif river.
Biographical Record
Abu Hammu Musa I ascended the throne of the Zayyanid Kingdom in 1308 following the lifting of the catastrophic eight-year Marinid siege of Tlemcen. Facing ruined countryside and depleted treasuries, he embarked on an energetic campaign of national reconstruction, restoring irrigation canals, rebuilding urban defenses, and restocking the royal granaries.
A formidable cavalry commander, Abu Hammu I restored sovereign authority over rebellious nomadic tribes, secured commercial routes across the Sahara and the Mediterranean coast, and extended the borders of the Kingdom of Tlemcen to the Chélif river and the Mitidja plain, inaugurating a golden era of economic recovery.
