Spending years in solitary contemplative retreat at the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus and Jerusalem, he composed the Ihya Ulum al-Din (The Revival of the Religious Sciences), proving that outer religious ritual is barren without inner heart purification, returning to Tous to teach until his passing.
